Finding a Mentor or Local Service Providers

If you find yourself in a situation where you know you need advice and contacts to either further your business or enhance your contacts for services in a rural area, there are a few things you have to know.

First of all, in the local area most everyone communicates on cell phones. As you network or ask for assistance you are asking for the cell phone number of the person or party that is suggested to you to contact. Once you have the cell number, call and leave a message and then text the same message. The next part is a waiting game. No need to follow-up the next day, wait until the party contacts you. I would suggest a follow-up after a week. For services in the area, the contractors and service providers are limited and you have to wait your turn. If you have a person that referred you, always make sure and text the person who referred you. This helps bring the text to the attention of the person you are contacting.

If you are looking for an advice, I suggest looking outside the immediate community. There are several ways to do this. You may want to contact a State extension office for advice on agricultural and others questions your may have for state regulated information and state advisors for help. Also contact your local utility and electric providers for questions relating to your utilities Try a local college for advice on business or small business loan departments. They have advisors and incubators for start-ups of small businesses.

For a full out mentor in your given field or industry , look on the internet for blogs about your field of expertise and conferences in your industry. Contact some of the speakers or authors and ask who they would recommend as a mentor. The search for mentors is one where you may want to contact someone in your prior location to assist you in your career. There are also a number of career coaches and business coaches that are on linked in. Review their profiles and contact them for an inquiry and a possible conversation. Mentor and Mentee relationships need to have mutual consent and respect.

Should you need internet connectivity, go to your local library for assistance.
